The biggest anime streaming platform has confirmed a release date for Makoto Shinkai's award-winning Suzume in select territories.
Your Name director Makoto Shinkai's newest film Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) has finally made its online streaming debut, with a release date now announced.
Fans who missed out on Suzume's theatrical release will finally be able to watch the award-winning anime film on Crunchyroll starting Nov. 16. Suzume is director Makoto Shinkai's latest work, following critical hits and fan favorites like 5 Centimeters per Second, Weathering with You and Your Name. Crunchyroll announced that Suzume will be released streaming on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET in North America, Central America, South America, Europe (except France), Africa, Oceania, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Middle East.

Shinkai first teased Suzume's release on X (formerly Twitter) on Dec. 15, 2021. The film debuted at no. 1 in Japan and screened there from November 2022 to May 2023, earning about $105.3 million throughout its run. Crunchyroll screened Suzume in North America on April 14, earning over $10 million by the end of its theatrical release. The film similarly opened at no. 1 on its opening day in countries like China and South Korea, following a well-received premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2023. Suzume is now Japan’s 14th all-time highest-grossing movie, as well as the country's 8th highest-earning anime film in history.

Shinkai's Suzume is a heartfelt coming-of-age story. According to the film's official synopsis, "Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young man on a journey 'looking for doors.' Suzume follows him to a ruin to a dilapidated building in the mountains and finds a free-standing, undisturbed door as if 'it' alone were saved from devastation. Suzume feels drawn by an invisible power and reaches out to the door... Soon, doors all over Japan start opening one after another. The doors that opened must be closed to shut out calamity that lies on the other side… Beckoned by the mysterious doors, Suzume's 'journey of closing doors' begins."

Suzume's lead protagonists are voiced by Nanoka Hara as Suzume Iwato and SixTONES pop group member Hokuto Matsumara debuting as Sōta Munakata, Suzume's companion in her "door-closing" journey. Shinkai directed the film, wrote the screenplay and developed the original story. Your Name's Masayoshi Tanaka and Kenichi Tsuchiya designed the characters and directed the animation, respectively. The score was composed by RADWIMPS and Kazuma Jinnouchi, whose credits also include Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and RWBY: Ice Queendom.
Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari has earned a worldwide gross of over $300 million to date.
